FAQ

Credits, accounts, data, and accuracy. For the mechanics of grading itself see Grading.

Credits and billing

How am I charged?

By the page. Grading consumes page credits from your balance: a two-page submission costs two pages. Credits are prepaid; there is no per-student or per-course fee.

What plans exist?

Term-based plans that credit a page allowance each billing period, sized either as a flat allowance or per seat on your roster, on a quarter or semester cycle. Top-up packs are available on any plan if you run short mid-term. Current prices and allowances are on the checkout page. We deliberately do not repeat figures here, because a documentation page is exactly where stale pricing goes to hide.

What happens if grading fails or I cancel?

Credits for unprocessed work are returned to your balance automatically. You are not charged for grading that did not complete, and you do not need to ask.

Do credits expire?

Credits remain available while your account is open. They carry no cash value and are not transferable. See the Terms of Service, Section 4.

Does Canvas use my credits?

No. Institution-provisioned Canvas use is covered by the institution’s agreement and does not draw on personal page credits.

Speed

How long does grading take?

Grading is live: each submission’s result streams in as it finishes. A single submission is typically under a minute; a full class is a few minutes, depending on how many questions the exam has.

Can I keep working while it grades?

Yes. Grading continues if you close the tab; results are there when you return. A long rubric-generation or grading run is not tied to your browser session.

Accuracy

How accurate is it?

Accurate enough to be worth reviewing rather than accurate enough to trust unreviewed, which is why review-and-approve is mandatory rather than optional. Verifiable question types (multiple choice, answers checkable by mathematical equivalence) are substantially more reliable than open-ended proofs and long written arguments, where judgement varies more.

We would rather say that plainly than quote a single accuracy number that would not survive contact with your particular exam.

What if it grades something wrong?

Change it. Edit any score or comment during review, or after approval. Student reports render live, so corrections appear without resending anything. If the rubric was the problem, fix the rubric and regrade, which re-scores against the corrected rubric while reusing the existing transcription.

Will students know AI was involved?

That is your call and your institution’s. RavenGrader does not announce itself on student feedback reports. Many institutions have disclosure expectations for automated assessment tools. Worth checking yours.

Every grade a student receives has been approved by an instructor. The AI proposes; a human decides. That is the honest description of what happened, and it is usually the one students care about.

Accounts and roles

Who needs an account?

Instructors, teaching assistants, and graders. Students never create accounts.

How do I add a TA or grader?

Invite them from the course. They receive a link, sign in or sign up, and land in that course with the role you assigned.

Can I use Google sign-in?

Yes, Continue with Google works for both signing up and signing in.

Student data and FERPA

Where is student work stored?

In our database and file storage, hosted in the United States. Grading sends page images and text to third-party AI providers for processing. The full list of processors, what each receives, where it operates, and which of them we hold a no-training agreement with is in the Privacy Policy.

Is it used to train AI models?

We do not train models on identifiable student coursework. As for the providers we send it to: our agreements with OpenAI and Google prohibit training on data we send them. We have not yet executed a data processing addendum with xAI (our primary grading model) or Meta, so we cannot promise the same for content those two receive. We would rather say that plainly than imply a protection we have not secured — Section 3 of the Privacy Policy spells out exactly what each provider gets. If your institution needs its data kept away from a provider in that position, talk to us before you deploy.

A student wants their data deleted.

Deletion requests for student records go through you or your institution, not directly to us. Student educational records are controlled by the institution, and acting on a student’s request without institutional authorisation could itself breach FERPA. Tell us what to delete and we will act on your instruction.

How long is work kept?

Deleting a course, exam, or submission removes it from your workspace immediately and it is permanently destroyed (records and stored files) after a recovery window. Full retention periods are in the Privacy Policy, Section 5.

Closing your account

How do I delete my account?

Account → Privacy → Delete account. Deletion is immediate and permanent: your subscription is canceled and your records and uploaded files are destroyed, with limited billing records retained in de-identified form for accounting.

I deleted it by mistake.

Deletion is irreversible and we cannot recover the data — the confirmation dialog requires typing your email for exactly this reason.
